Phil and Roselyn returned late that night, and I was still on the front porch waiting when they got back. Roselyn greeted me with a smile before heading inside, while Phil joined me on the porch, stretching his legs out in front of him. He sighed and stifled a yawn.

“Roselyn’s a lot of work can’t believe I had to be her wingman till she found the perfect dress,” he said after a while, then chuckled. “It wasn’t fun at all, but I had no other choice. We’ve been best friends forever.”

I could tell he shared a wonderful relationship with Roselyn. I still couldn’t understand why they had to separate though. Phil turned to me and asked. “How are you? Fun day with the girls yeah?”

“Bree’s a handful herself,” I replied. “She’s got such a talented mind. I find her amazing.”

He smiled and touched my face, gently stroking my brows and then my cheeks. “You’re amazing too,” I told him.

“I’ve been told,” he replied with a puff of pride, then laughed when I rolled my eyes.

“We still haven’t told Bree about the wedding,” he said. “I’m kind of working my way to that, but each time I see her look at me and Roselyn, I just …. It’s sad that I have to take away that childish hope she has of us getting back together,” he said.

“Why did it end?” I asked, unable to hold back the question any longer. “You both look great together, and it’s obvious your friendship’s still solid, so why didn’t it work?”

“We fell out of love,” he replied to me slowly, then took my hand in his and stared into my eyes. “Do you know what it means to love someone, but not be in love with them?”

I swallowed hard because of the intensity of his eyes on mine. It made me breathless, and I had to remind myself to breathe when my pulse skipped a beat.

“I wasn’t in love with her, and she wasn’t in love with me anymore either. We used to argue a lot, and it just wasn’t fun anymore. It was like we were two different people. I was working a lot, she wanted to do what she liked, but she couldn’t with Bree being so young, and I also couldn’t walk away from everything I was building towards, so it all fell apart.”

“Do you regret it?” I asked, wanting to know what he felt about Roselyn getting married to someone else. “Are you okay with her marrying someone else?” Are you still in love with her? Is what I really wanted to ask.

He shook his head without hesitation. “It took a while, but we both came to terms with the truth. We’re better together as friends.”

His hands stroked mine, and I dropped my gaze to where our skin touched. “Today, she told me that she met the love of her life,” he whispered. “I’m glad she’s happy.”

He smiled at me, then leaned over to brush a kiss over my lips. My heart did a slow dive in my chest and the pang of guilt I had felt earlier doubled inside me.
